NEDC Begins Sensitization on Deradicalization of Extremists, Peaceful Coexistence

The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has commenced a sensitisation programme on promotion of peace, inter-religion dialogue and deradicalisation for peaceful coexistence among the residents of the region.

The Managing Director of the Commssion, Mr Mohammed Alkali, disclosed this in Bauchi on Monday, during the graduation ceremony of Batch C NEDC ICT Training Programme for 200 trainees and distribution of starter packs.

Alkali said that the Commission was reaching out to sensitise the public particularly youths on the dangers of extremism and radicalisation, adding that efforts has been made to prevent the most at-risk individuals from being radicalised and appeal to their conscience.

According to him, the Commission was increasing awareness on religious extremism and ways to recognise signs of extremism and skills to adequately identify its ills, saying that the programme would emphase on moderation and peaceful co-existence in the region.

"We will be making use of radio which is good for our local people and there are other programmes which involves physical engagement where we will involve the elders, the Emirs, the chiefs and whoever that can give respite to what we are saying.

"NEDC is working to increase knowledge of and respect for peace and peaceful coexistence in the region by engaging selected youth towards de-radicalisation to encourage radicalised individuals to disengage and provide psychosocial support for better livelihood," he said.

Responding, Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state appreciated NEDC for its humanitarian programmes in the region.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Aminu Gamawa, Mohammed hoped that the crop of youths trained by the commission would constitute a hope for creativity where they can think freely and have tools to work.

Not less than 200 ICT trainees were graduated under the Batch C training exercise in Bauchi.

According to the Managing Director, 580 beneficiaries had been trained and graduated in the training from Batch A, B and C in Bauchi state. 

Alkali also said that, in line with the NEDC's strategic plan to improve access to Information Technology in the North East, the Commission established ICT resource training centers in each of the 6 states of the North East, hosted in tertiary institutions in the states.

He explained that the objective is to improve access to ICT resources within the region and equip the teeming youths across the region with the necessary vocational, educational skills and tools that could make them self-reliant.

20,000 cartons of assorted drugs and medical consumables were given by the commission to the Bauchi state government to prevent the outbreak of cholera.
