Bauchi NUJ Kicks Against Intimidation of Journalists

The Bauchi state Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) frown at groups and individuals who are fun of intimidating and humiliating journalists while carrying out their constitutional obligations.

Chairman of the Union, Comrade Umar Sa'idu made the remark in his welcoming address, on Thursday during a one day training workshop for members of the State Executive Council (SEC) at the Mohammed Abdullahi conference hall of the union.

He said that the leadership of the NUJ will not sit down and watch any group or individual intimidating or humiliating journalists while performing their duties as the fourth estate of realm in the state.

According to him, there is no society or government that would succeed without press freedom.

The NUJ Chairman however, cautioned his members to always practice the profession according to its ethics, especially by ensuring objectivity, fairness, accuracy and balance in their reportage.

Comrade Umar while commending journalists in Bauchi for their fair and balanced reportage, especially during the last party primaries, warned that the union will not hesitate to sanction any erring member.

He therefore, urged his members to continue with the good efforts to ensure peaceful general elections come 2023.

Comrade Umar urged the participants at the workshop to pay serious attention during training in order to derive maximum benefit from it which he said will not only benefit the participants but the society in general.

He said organizing workshop mainly for the SEC members was the first of its kind in the history of the union in Bauchi.

The NUJ Chairman reiterated his desire to continue organizing such training and re-training to the members in order to update them with the current knowledge of how to contribute towards the development of the society.

Themed: "Role of the Journalists in Maintaining Peaceful Coexistence in the society, Comrade Umar urged the SEC members to reporting their activities to the state council regularly for necessary guidance.

The NUJ chairman commended the Bauchi state government for providing the befitting office accommodation for the union as well as studio for the NTA Bauchi and for showing commitment towards resuscitating the State owned media houses, BATV/ BRC.

He said that the development will enable the two media houses own by the Bauchi state to compete with its sister organizations across the country. 

The NUJ chairman however, appealed to the state government to revisit the issue of upgrading the NUJ secretariat to enable journalists have a conducive environment to operate.

Three resource persons who were invited to train the SEC members by the NUJ include, the National Secretary of the union, Mr. Shuaibu Usman Leman, former NUJ chairman and lecturer with the department of mass communication, Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Comrade Sani Mohammed and an IT expart, Malam Biliyaminu Jambil.

Invited guests that graced the opening ceremony of the training include, Bauchi state Head of service, National Secretary of the NUJ, Mr. Shuaibu Usman Leman, media veterans, as well as media Executives in the state.
