Buhari's Comments on ASUU Strike Raises Eyebrows

President Muhammadu Buhari's call for the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU to call off the strike has sparked controversy among Nigerians.

ASUU has been on strike for months, and speaking in Daura, Buhari told APC governors and party leaders that "the strike is enough."

Buhari expressed concern over the impact of the strike on the future of education and development in Nigeria.

He said although he understands their needs, discussions will continue as students are in their classroom.

"We hope ASUU will feel sorry for the people for prolonging the strike, it is enough to keep students at home," said Buhari, who also called on some senior Nigerians close to the teachers' union to intervene, to convince the teachers.

The president's remarks have attracted the attention and generates reactions among Nigerians, especially on social media.

The ASUU strike has been one of the most talked about topics between Monday and Tuesday on Twitter in Nigeria.

What does ASUU say?

The Academic Staff Union of Union ASUU responded to Buhari's remarks, saying it was surprised by the president's remarks.

Professor Abdulkadir Muhammad, president of ASUU Kano Zone, told the BBC they were unhappy with Buhari's remarks, saying "the remarks came from a man who did not seem to know what was going on or the situation in the country."

"In our opinion as president, this strike did not start today. Today is the fifth month, and we think he may have woken up. Or he may not have spoken for a long time and now he has a chance to talk about the strike."

"We have been without pay for months and we have not died. So white supremacy will not solve the strike unless the government does the right thing, ”he said.

He added that if Buhari said the strike was enough, he should take action to end it.

ASUU said a committee set up by the president should have called to tell them that the session was enough and wanted to know why the strike was not called off.

"Everything is in the hands of the government. If it chooses to withdraw, it will be withdrawn."

Buhari's comments on the ASUU strike have raised eyebrows

Buhari's statement shows Nigerians that his administration has failed or does not know what it is doing on the importance of education, ”said Prof. Abdulkadir.

What are Nigerians saying?

Many Nigerians have commented on President Buhari's call for ASUU to call off its nearly five-month strike.
