Kuje Prison Attack: 'About 600 Inmates Escaped'- Defense Minister

About 600 inmates escaped during the attack on Kuje Prison on Tuesday night, Defense Minister Bashir Magashi confirmed to the BBC on Wednesday morning.

Some 300 escaped prisoners surrendered to authorities while security forces arrested some of them.

Mimistan blamed Boko Haram for the attack, saying there were at least 64 Boko Haram fighters in the prison.

Magashi also confirmed the death of one Civil Defense officer, "the attack killed one Civil Defense officer."

The prison is currently under the control of the authorities. There are at least 994 inmates in the prison.

The attack comes hours after gunmen in Katsina ambushed President Buhari's convoy on their way to Daura.
