Mobile Phone Users to Face Higher Charges

Nigerians will soon have to pay more for the use of mobile phones, after the federal government plans to impose a new tax on telecommunication companies.

This follows the statement by the Minister of Finance and Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, that the federal government will impose a five percent customs tax on telecommunication companies.

The minister made the statement during a stakeholders meeting on the implementation of the customs tax system yesterday in Abuja, organized by the National Communications Commission (NCC).

Since phone users are already paying 7.5 percent of the luxury goods tax (VAT), now this customs tax of 5 percent will also be charged to the phone users.

The burden will be shifted on to phone users as the president of the Association of Licensed Telecom Owners of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo announced.

Mr. Gbenga said that since they can not ease the cost of using the phone and other means of communication, this is why they have to shift the burden to the public.

He said that they will do this because they are already paying 39 taxes, and they are facing the problem of fire where they spend a lot of money to buy diesel fuel.
