Human Resource Gap: Bauchi State Engages 120 Health Personnel


As part of the robust effort to manage gap challenges in human resource gap in the health sector, Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency has so far recruited 120 newly Basic, Community Midwives and CHWEs which are to be distributed in the health facilities across the 20 local governments in the state.

Speaking at the orientation program held at Aliko Dangote College of Nursing and Midwifery Bauchi, Executive Chairman Agency Dr Rilwanu Mohammed said the state has made a giant stride by engaging about 1061 skilled health staff in order to augment the challenges for manpower in sector health.

Dr. Rilwanu said currently, the State PHCDA is having 3,200 skilled staff working in various health facilities, pointing out that more effort are being channelled by the state government to recruit additional Health workers to bridge the existing gaps.

He said, "the increasing concerns for effective maternal newborn and child health intervention has made it necessary for the state Government to lift embargo on employment, adding that all efforts to recruit more health workers are being put in place."

"The Agency has so far recruited 120 community midwives and nurses that would be distributed across remote Health facilities in the state, each would receive 30,000 stipend and can be. 

In his speech, the Permanent Secretary overseeing Ministry of Health, Alhaji Ali Babayo, says the orientation is an avenue to properly equipp the newly recruited health personnel in order to guide them on the modus operandi of service.

Also commenting, the State Focal Person Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), Dr Salisu Idris Isah, explained that the program which was conceived by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency is to essentially provide basic health services to the vulnerables at the grassroot.

Dr Salis further revealed that the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) was established under section 11 of the National Health Act as a catalytic funding to improve access to primary health care.

According to the Focal Person, the State were able to identify one functional PHC per ward in 323 Ward PHCCs across the 20 LGAs, conducted a facility Baseline Assessment as well as selection of 20 Desk officers.

The scheme's operational guidelines involve ensuring accountability framework that led to BSPHCDA TSA Accounts opening at the CBN Bauchi- Programme and Operations Accounts.

In Bauchi State, the program has successfully recorded significant progress as it has conducted health facility-analysis to identify HRH gaps, advertised recruitment process of midwives in the State. 

The state has conducted selection of pharmacy vendors, sensitization meeting and on-boarding of pharmaceuticals companies for essential drugs & commodities on BHCPF, monthly LGA Supportive Supervision and Mentoring to Health Facilities (Two times) as well as sending monthly communication support to the LGAs.
