The training is part of an efforts to improve on deliverables especially maternal health regarding issues of Vesicovaginal Fistula VVF in Bauchi state.

Dr. Alkali said the training is a very important one as participants are expected to step it down at their various facilities and give feedback to the board at the end of the day.

According to him, "cases of VVF might be increasing because there is increase in awareness. You know ultimately, initially people are not even aware of this issue. So there are lots of issues in our communities that are not informed on what to do next."

He said with the current effort of creating awareness, more cases have continued to emerge because many people's status have now become obvious.

Dr. Alkali said lack of attending to health facilities by women in the local communities especially during delivery period, often made it difficult to have their records.

He said, "once a woman give birth at the community and she did not come to facility, any of the hospital whether primary or secondary, it means we don't have the record, and she will be there and people will start taking it to be a different issue."

"But recently with the increase in awareness in our communities, we are beginning to see more cases of these. That doesn't mean that number of cases are increasing, but awareness has increased, definitely you begin to see more people come into facilities," said Dr. Alkali.

Dr. Alkali said it is hoped that at the end of the training, the participants will be able to gain the prerequisites knowledge and apply it to the health system to bring positive change that will bring positive response in terms of reducing the number of cases of VVF the state is recording.

MAL. RABI'U ABDULWAHAB
Fistula Desk Officer, Hospital Management Board

Earlier in his remarks, Malam Rabiu Abdulwahab, Fistula Desk Officer Hospital Management Board Bauchi, said the idea behind the training is to equip the health care service providers with the knowledge to be able to manage Obstetrics Fistula at various secondary facilities within the state.

He said this will subsequently reduce the high volume on National Obstetrics Centre Ningi as the number is too much.

Malam Rabiu said over fifty participants are drawn from interdisciplinary cadres who have one or more things to do with managing obstetrics from the secondary health care facilities.

He therefore urged the participants to make good use of the opportunity and get the most out of it for the purpose of achieving the target objectives.
