IMPROVING HEALTH INDICES: BSPHCDA Sets Up Data Committee- Dr. Rilwanu

In an effort to provide effective and efficient health care service delivery in Bauchi, the State Primary Health Care Development Agency has set up a committee to look into data related issues aimed at improving the healthcare system in the state.

Executive Chairman of the Agency Dr. Rilwanu Muhammad who disclosed this during Factsheet Development and Sustainability Plan Review Workshop organized by the Bauchi State Ministry of Health in collaboration with USAID funded Integrated Health Program IHP, said the Agency have discovered that there are a lots of issues on data validation and data reporting system in Bauchi State.

Dr. Rilwanu decried that most of the data in the health facilities are not uploaded which is why in many cases, the scoring system of Bauchi is very low, adding that even the validation in many cases does not conform with what is obtainable in the health facilities.

According to him, “We have a lot of issues on data validation and data reporting system in Bauchi state, and we have to make sure that our data is in conformity with what we are talking about.”

“This Committee was set to look at all issues of data and its related activities so that we will be able to harmonize all activities at once. We also involved private clinics because we send our data to them, and also we involved Guild of Medical Doctors and budget and planning because they are always with us during the activities.”

He said, “The essence of this is to make sure that we are reporting what we have on ground, not the data that was not there at all. Sometimes we don’t even have the data because people think we have data clacks in every local government, they are not even working, we don’t even know them.”

There has been serious concern that not recording data appropriately would have negative impact on the health system of the state.

“Usually if you don’t report the data, it means that thing have not been done at all. Our scoring system, for example Penta-3 coverage, our indicator in immunization, it was not reported, then it was not there, and so we score low. We have been working hard with the support of our partners but our data is still low.”

“We now realized that the data discrepancy and the data issue is a problem in Bauchi State, even for Covid-19 is still the same thing. They actually carry out the immunization but they are not synchronizing the data, so the data has not gone to the IMMIT Platform, it is still there as raw data, which is a problem,” said the EC.

Dr. Rilwanu further lamented that the state data are not really too good, adding that, “We now realized that some data are still lying in the health facilities and are not uploaded into our HMI data tools, and then uploaded into the DHIS tools, and then there is always a monthly data validation meeting at the local government level, but they are not even reporting…”

He further revealed that, “UNICEF has agreed to sponsor this committee to go round each facility, particularly all the 323 facilities to look at these data that have not been uploaded, whether it is service delivery data, whether it is Covid-19 data, whether it is any other data that has been there and has not been uploaded, and then synchronization of the data as well,”

The Executive Chairman also said the Agency has agreed to make sure it strengthens its integrated monitoring and mentorship supportive supervision in order to improve the health indices of the state.

He reiterated that, “We need to improve our plan session for ANC, we need to improve our outreach services for other activities including service delivery point, family planning, immunization and other activities and record as well.”

“We want to also not leave behind our private sector because some of our people go to private sector to deliver and to carry out immunization but they don’t give the data. They are complaining that they don’t have computers, they don’t have staff to do that particular work.”

Dr. Rilwanu said the Factsheet Development and Sustainability Plan Review Meeting also focus on the intention of Bauchi State government to have a regulation on the private sector which is very key to improving the healthcare service delivery.

He says this regulation is going to support the strengthening of all private sector engagement process, including those in the private clinic.
