Presenting the address, the Deputy Governor noted most importantly the compelling need for the Association to strengthen and widen their tentacles by massively educating the public in the prevention, causes symptoms, effects and cure of kidney disease while other medical personnnel address other vital organs of the body.
He said "the hosting of this 15th Annual Scientific Conference in Gombe less than two weeks after the Nigerian Medical Association held its National Executive Council meeting at this venue could have been a coincidence. However, as a State we consider such as a very beneficial venture and indeed giving the state additional Push towards the laudable works done in the health sector knowing too that “healthy citizens are the greatest assets any country can have” (W. Churchill, 1874-1965)."
"I am sure that your presence in the state, your interaction with the Honourable Commissioner of Health, Executive Secretary, Primary Health Care and other stakeholders in the Health sector would have revealed much of what the state has done from the prevention of disease and management of diseases," said the deputy governor.
He added that, "It may interest you to know that apart from security which is a class of its own, health is the first priority of the Government that came on board,on the 29th of May, 2019. Human beings apart from being social beings are essentially biological beings that are made of very complex and numerous organs that must all be healthy and work in harmony for a human to consider himself/herself well. Any malfunction of the organs renders the entire body sick."
"Accordingly, the Nigeria Association of Nephrology Nurses that is concerned with the medical study of human beings particularly with everything about kidney from its state of being normal through all the stages that warrant a replacement theory is considered very important. That being the case you are to go into more researches to identify other causes of the sickness of the kidney quite apart from what is available in your textbooks. This is for obvious reasons. Events and happenings in Nigeria today that has heighten tension, pressure, frustration and excessive stress on human beings."
"In addition, urbanization/industrialization must be given more attention. Expectedly therefore the negative impact of these on the vital organ must have been the increase in the number of patients having kidney disease. That available records suggest that 20 million Nigerians are living with kidney disease, while about 10,000 of the number are at the End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) annually, is a challenge for you."
"This being the case there is a very urgent and compelling need for your association to strengthen and widen your tentacles by massively educating the population on the prevention, causes, symptoms, effects and cure of kidney disease, while other medical personnel address other vital organs of the body," he stressed.
He also emphasized that, "Let me observe that there is every need for your members to have a broader understanding of the social world of patients, health, illness and health care to complement your technical and clinical competencies. This is not really a very tall order since one of the sub-themes of this five day Conference is 'Multi Disciplinary Care of Renal Patient,' Knowing very well also that Leadership is language I advice that you can achieve very much by choosing your words more wisely in the society as you attempt to educate on everything about kidney”. This is for comprehension and acceptability of those you approach so as to get their buy in and participation."
"As a government, Gombe State under the good governance of His Excellency, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya remain grateful for the decision of your association to hold this conference here as many of the residents in the state will have knowledge that was hitherto limited to a few. The resource persons I observed in the program will just do that."
"Always be assured of the support, collaboration, partnership and above all the political will of the leadership in the state to ensure the population attain maximum health by its residents. Just as I wish you a peaceful, fruitful and effective deliberations, I have the honour and priviledge to declare open this 5 day Conference in the desire of improved kidney care, improved health care service delivery to humanity and above all to the glory of God," he added.
