Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed of Bauchi State on Sunday appealed to the National Assembly to consider as important and critical, amendment of Nigeria's constitution by assigning officials roles and responsibilities to traditional institutions in view of their positive contributions to societal reorientation and the socio-economic development of the country.
The governor made the appeal at the presentation of Staff of Office to the 11th and 10th Emirs of Misau and Jama'are , Alhaji Ahmed Suleiman mni and Alh Nuhu Ahmed MUhammadu Wabi respectively and stated that, traditional rulers played a vital role at ensuring peace and stability in their domains.
He stressed the need for traditional rulers to be carried along in the affairs of the nation especially on matters related to societal development and enjoined them to ensure a balance between tradition and modernity by keeping pace with the dynamics and complexities with modern society in discharging thier duties.
Governor Bala Mohammed urged the coronated Emirs to not only strive to emulate the enviable attributes of their late fathers, but offer intellectual contributions towards the social, economic and political development of their people.
"In your positions as the Emirs of Misau and Jama'are, the people of your Emirates will be looking up to you for temporal leadership. As members of the State Council of Chiefs, you are expected to actively participate in the activities of the Council for the socio-economic development of the State. I cherished and adore your outstanding zeal and commitment to ensure that your subjects sleep in peace and safety.
"Traditional rulers should be on the same page with the government of day by offering constructive and intellectual contributions for the economic, political and social development of your people and the state in general. The duties of an Emir are to ensure the wellbeing of his subjects and encourage meaningful development projects under an atmosphere of peace and stability."
The governor reassured of his administration's support to traditional institutions and advised them to reciprocate the gesture by continue to work towards the continued peace, unity and development in the areas of maintenance of law and order in their various domains.
In their separate remarks, the coronated Emirs, Ahmed Suleiman of Misau and Nuhu Ahmed Wabi of Jama'are, assured to live up to expectation in the discharge of their responsibilities through working with all the stakeholders in the affairs of their emirates.
