Group Calls on Falana, Others to Provide Legal Support to Kano Cleric

A religious group, As'habul Khafi Warraqeem, Bauchi state chapter, has called on Human Rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana to help in providing legal support to a Kano state Islamic cleric, Abduljabbar Kabara who was sentenced to death in the state.

It could be recalled that A Kano Upper Shari’a Court sitting at Kofar Kudu, Kano State, on December 15, sentenced the Islamic cleric to death by hanging.

Kabara was tried and sentenced to death on the issue bordering on blasphemous statements against the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), an act described as capable of inciting public peace.

Addressing journalists in Bauchi on Monday, the group, through its Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Musa, also called on the National Human Rights Commission, Amnesty International, National and International Human rights Organizations as well as Human Rights activist, Ahmad Isa, known as Ordinary President, and others to join them counter what it described as unfair and unjustified gang up against its religious leader by providing legal aid.

According to the group, it has resolved to appeal against the judgment in a higher court of law to quash the 'unsatisfactory judgment' and ensure the cleric's fundamental human rights of freedom of religion and thought as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution is assured.

"The so-called judgment is totally wrong. Therefore, we reject it.

"The allegation of blasphemy against the Sheikh is nothing but campaign of calumny and character assassination on the popular cleric by his detractors who feel threatened by his increasing popularity.

"Thus, they purported an allegation of blasphemy to give him a bad name and have justification for their evil plan to exterminate his life," said the group
