Oxfam Trains 30 Bauchi Stakeholders on Climate Change Mitigation Strategies

No fewer than 30 stakeholders have been trained on climate change mitigation strategies by a Non-Governmental organization, Oxfam in Bauchi state.

A Communique issued at the end of a two-day training informed that the Programme was organized by Climate Justice Project (African Activist for Climate Justice) at the Chartwell Hotel Bauchi recently.

The communique which was jointly signed by Dr. Tijjani Garba of the Department of Environmental Technology, ATBU, Bauchi and Isah Garba Gadau, state Secretary of the NUJ, Bauchi, among others, noted that the training was part of Oxfam's continuous effort in supporting the Bauchi State Government to reduce to the barest minimum, extent of Climate Change.

The communique further noted that the Climate Justice Project is working under OXFAM to set the agenda for Climate Change and National Development Content for Government Officials, Civil Society Organisations, Private Sectors and the Media.

According to the Organization, the aim of the training was to improve the knowledge of the participants on climate change issues in Nigeria, develop the skills of the participants on national contribution issues.

Other objectives according to the meeting, was to sensitize the participants about climate change mitigation strategies and enhance their attitude towards effective climate change management.

The communique commended the Bauchi State Government for its effort towards ensuring a Medium Term Development Plan on Climate Change through the provision of funds in the 2023 budget as well as creating the enabling environment for donor partners to operate freely in the state.

The participants appreciated the effort of Climate Justice Project for organizing the training especially at a time the rate and consequences of climate change are increasing day-by-day.

The communique while noting with concern, low awareness on national development content by critical stakeholders that is resulting to poor engagement in climate change activities, called for redress to ensure effective and inclusive participation.

The participants called for the domestication of federal government adaptation Plan on Climate Change, National Development Content and other national policies on climate change based on Bauchi state peculiarities. 

The communique urged Bauchi state government to review and adopt the State agricultural policy and develop a Climate Finance Committee.

They called on the state government to develop an action plan on climate change and exhibit high level of commitment in the National Development Content.

Other recommendations made by the participants include, mass afforestation to be embraced by the Bauchi state government through the ministry of environment to reduce deforestation as well as to check the excesses of miners, burning of tyres for commercial purposes  and support the practice of organic farming as remedy to environmental degradation.

The communique further urged the media and CSOs to intensify enlightenment campaigns for farmers to appreciate the importance of organic farming and embrace same for food sufficiency as well as reintroduction of Annual Agric Show from  local governments to state levels to help farmers key in to modern farming and livestock production.

The participants also advised the Bauchi State Government to create a full-fledged department of Climate Change or unit in the Ministry of environment and desk offices in relevant MDAs to deal with issues relating to climate change .

It also advocated for the involvement of Private Sector participation in climate change issues in the state to help in mitigating its effects in addition to massive enlightenment campaigns to politicians, traditional title holders on the need to understand the implications of climate change, especially the areas caused by the activities of humans.

The meeting appealed to the Federal Government to expedite action on addressing the influx of international nomads in to the country, to prevent deforestation.
