A group North East All Progressives Congress (APC) Rapid Response Team (NEAPCRRT), Bauchi State Chapter, has advocated for direct primaries to enhance internal democracy of the party in the State.
Dr Usman Disina, the Chapter Chairman, made the call at the inauguration of Local government area Ambassadors, youth and women leaders of the team on Monday in Bauchi.
He noted that endorsement of aspirants to any office had been the challenge and caused lack of internal democracy to our party in the state.
He urged leadership and stakeholders to make direct primaries mandatory for the selection of election candidates by the party.
“Direct primaries involve the participation of all registered members of a party in the selection of the party’s candidates.
“While indirect primaries on the other hand relies on the use of delegates who are often party leaders or political appointees at different levels to decide who flies its flag.
“APC has used both direct and indirect primaries to nominate its candidates, this poses serious disaffection among party members,” he explained.
The Chairman called on leaders and stakeholders of the party to reflect on prevailing challenges and come up with strategies to reclaim the state from the opposition.
Disina urged the newly inaugurated officials of the team to remain steadfast, loyal, honest and committed to the repositioning of the party in the state.
He commended the party leadership for giving them consent and support to operate and work toward reinvigorating the party structures in the state.
Earlier, Alhaji Biliya Bura, who represented the party at the inauguration ceremony, commended the team for coming up with such a team to compliment the effort of the state executives.
He described the team as tools to save the party and reclaim the state from the opposition.
Bura assured the team all the necessary support and guidance to achieve the mandate it was established for, “saying they are with the team, because they will add value to the party in the state”.
