My Loyalty to Gov Bala Doesn't Compromise Official Obligations - BAHA Speaker

Bauchi State speaker of the House of Assembly Honorable Abubakar Y. Suleiman has said that his loyalty to the state governor Bala Mohammed has nothing to do with his official obligations as leader of the parliament, hence will not stop him from discharging his constitutional duties.

In a press release signed by the Speaker's acting spokesperson Mukhtar Garba Kobi, the speaker reacted to the post on his social media handle which generated a flurry of reactions, especially from critics, due to the Speaker referring to the Governor as his political boss.

The statement further stated that the Speaker clarified that his personal friendship with the Governor is distinct from their official duties, emphasizing that, as a Nigerian citizen, he has the constitutional right to freedom of expression.

According to the Speaker, “Displaying loyalty in a social media post does not impede my inability, nor that of the Assembly members, to perform our legislative duties effectively,” he stated

Honorable Suleiman further explained this position by highlighting the Governor's leadership and developmental projects across the state, particularly in his local government.

“This prompted me to express my opinion openly, which I am entitled to. The Governor has, on several occasions, referred to me as his boss during official speeches. What, then, is wrong if I call him my boss and leader?” he asked.

The Speaker reassured the public that his loyalty would not compromise his official and constitutional responsibilities as a member and Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly. He stressed that he and the other Assembly members are committed to the welfare of the people, providing amenities, and working together, regardless of party differences.

Sulaiman added that, “People should not judge leaders based on personal comments or social media posts. The legislative arm is dedicated to serving the people. Mutual understanding, synergy, and collaboration between the executive and legislative branches of government are essential for delivering democratic dividends and fostering social and economic development.”

The Speaker therefore called for continuous prayers for the leaders and maintaining hope for achieving democratic progress for all.
