The Federal Commissioner, National Population Commission (NPC) Bauchi State, Alhaji Ibrahim Darazo stressed that adopting modern technology would expedite gathering accurate demographic data for census exercise in the country.
Darazo stated this at a news conference to commemorate 2024 world population day on Monday in Bauchi,”with the theme "Embracing the Power of Inclusive Data Towards a Resilient and Equitable Future for All."
He noted that timing of data collection, where the previous census was conducted 18 years ago resulting in the use of obsolete information that could mislead policy decisions, and planning,
“Thereby compromising resilience in policy measures and rewarding excellence and equality,” Darazo stated.
He explained that the commission is tasked with conducting a census to gather accurate demographic data crucial for effective governance and planning.
“To achieve this goal efficiently, the commission must adopt modern technology to enhance data collection, validation, and analysis processes.
“This report outlines the benefits and implementation strategies of deploying modern technology for a timely, reliable, and acceptable census.
“The benefits include enhanced data accuracy, real-time data collection, improved data quality, cost efficiency, and increased public trust.,” he said.
The Commissioner added that “by investing in technological infrastructure, training personnel, raising public awareness, collaborating with technology partners, and conducting pilot tests,” he said.
Darazo explained that NPC can successfully transition to a modernized census approach.
“This transition will not only streamline data collection processes but also ensure that census results are credible and useful for informed decision-making at national and local levels,” he said.
