ATBUTH Resident Doctors Stage Peaceful Demonstration, Calls for Action on Colleague’s Abduction

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, has staged a peaceful demonstration, urging the government, security agencies, and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene in the case of their colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who was kidnapped in December of last year.

The protest, which took place at the hospital premises, highlighted the growing concern and frustration among the medical community over the prolonged abduction.

Speaking during the demonstration, Dr. Umar Gabi, the President of the ATBUTH Bauchi branch of ARD, expressed the deep distress felt by resident doctors nationwide over the abduction of Dr. Popoola and her family.

He noted that although Dr. Popoola's husband was released after several months, she remains in captivity, and the uncertainty surrounding her situation has left many of their members in a state of despair.

Dr. Gabi warned that, "We have been in a dilemma for too long, and our patience is wearing thin. If by the end of this month no significant progress is made, we will be left with no choice but to follow the directive from our national body to embark on strike."

He also stressed that the ongoing insecurity has severely impacted the doctors' sense of safety and wellbeing, which in turn affects their ability to perform their duties effectively.

Dr. Gabi further called on the relevant authorities to take immediate action to secure the release of Dr. Popoola, as well as the 20 medical students who were abducted along the Makurdi highway. "Our profession is one of saving lives, but how can we continue to do that when our own lives are in constant danger?" he questioned, reflecting the tension and unease among the medical staff.

Adding his voice to the cause, the Past President of NARD, Dr. Godiya Ishaya Dare, expressed his anger and disappointment over the handling of the abduction cases.

He said, "The way this matter is being addressed is unacceptable,"  urging all Nigerians to join hands with the association to ensure the safe return of Dr. Popoola, the abducted medical students, and all other Nigerians held captive.

Dr. Dare also took the opportunity to commend the solidarity shown by NARD members across the country, thanking them for their support and participation in the demonstration.

"Your commitment to this cause is a testament to our collective resolve to not only advocate for our colleague but also to stand against the growing insecurity that threatens our lives and profession," he added.
