A lecturer at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, Dr. Usman Mohammed Aliyu, has been accused of sexually harassing a female student, Kamila Rufa'i Aliyu, a married M.Eng. Chemical Engineering student.
The student's husband, Alhaji Ja'afaru Buba, has petitioned the university's management, seeking justice.
According to the petition, filed by Barrister Mohammed Sani, Dr. Aliyu allegedly harassed Kamila despite knowing she was married, sending her unbecoming love messages via WhatsApp and threatening to fail her in exams after she resisted his advances.
The petition urges the university to investigate and sanction Dr. Aliyu according to its laws and conditions of service.
However, in a surprising twist, Dr. Aliyu has filed a defamation suit against Kamila at the Bauchi State High Court, which has been adjourned to November 27, 2027. The lecturer has denied all allegations through an associate.
The university's Public Relations Officer, Zailani Bappah, claimed unawareness of the issue but promised to confirm with the management.
The husband, Alhaji Buba, appeals to the university authorities to investigate the matter and ensure justice is served, protecting students from such harassment.
The case highlights concerns about sexual harassment in educational institutions and the need for prompt action to address such allegations.
