Bauchi Committee on SGBV Secures 80 Convictions, Aims to Deter Perpetrators

The Bauchi State Action Committee on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) has achieved a significant milestone, securing 80 convictions for perpetrators of sexual-based violence.

Chairperson Hajiya Aishatu Bala Mohammed revealed this while interacting with reporters in Bauchi, emphasizing that these convictions will serve as a deterrent to others.

Hajiya Aishatu expressed concern over the disturbing nature of some cases, including a father impregnating his biological daughter twice. She noted that rapes within family circles are a significant issue, affecting not only girls but also boys.

The committee has resolved some cases without taking them to court, focusing on empowering couples to support their families and addressing domestic issues stemming from harsh economic conditions.

These efforts aim to reintegrate victims into society and help them resume their normal lives.

Hajiya Aishatu attributed the moral decadence leading to SGBV to a decline in social norms and values at the family and societal levels. She also identified illiteracy in conventional and religious teachings as a contributing factor.

To combat this, the committee suggests engaging the media to raise awareness about SGBV cases, shaming culprits, and providing succor to victims.

By highlighting these cases, the committee hopes to deter others from committing similar crimes. The wife of the Governor commended the committee's commitment to mitigating SGBV in the state, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to address this critical issue.
