Lawyers for the Cause of Bauchi (LAWBA) has rejected the Senate's purported removal of Hon. Justice Danladi Umar as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
At a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) Secretariat in Bauchi, LAWBA described the Senate's decision as illegal, ultra vires, and unconstitutional.
According to LAWBA, the 1999 Constitution clearly outlines the process for the removal of the CCT Chairman, which requires a two-thirds majority vote by both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
LAWBA argued that the Senate's reliance on Section 157(1) of the Constitution is misplaced, as it does not apply to the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
The group called on the Senate and the Executive arm of government to be guided by the provisions of the law and to respect the constitutional process for the removal of the CCT Chairman.
