Nigeria's former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has blamed the country's poor leadership on its dismal reading culture.
At the launch of Emmanuel Gogwim Kayi's book, "Without A Name," Dogara stressed that Nigerians prioritize celebrations over seeking knowledge.
Dogara emphasized reading's importance for personal growth and leadership development, citing biblical examples like Jesus Christ and Daniel.
He encouraged leaders to be studious, saying, "Book worms always end up as acclaimed leaders."
Dogara said that Nigeria faces challenges due to poor reading culture, including lack of knowledgeable leaders, limited access to quality education, Inadequate libraries and reading materials, as well as poverty and limited resources.
In order to address this, Dogara suggests that there is the need for establishing standard public libraries and employing qualified teachers.
He added that encouraging students to develop a positive reading attitude as well as
Making reading a hobby and prioritizing it can also go a long way in addressing the case.
