Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has emphasized the crucial role of qualitative education in Nigeria's development, stating that it is the key to lifting the country out of poverty.
Speaking at the 50th anniversary of Nakam Memorial School in Plateau State, Dogara stressed that education is the engine room for any meaningful national development.
Dogara argued that investing in human capital development is more important than physical capital development, such as roads and bridges.
He explained that an educated mind can produce the necessary infrastructure, citing the examples of South Korea and other Asian countries that have achieved prosperity through education.
Dogara also highlighted the need for qualified teachers and scholarship funds to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
He encouraged the Old Students Association to invest in the quality of teachers and set up a scholarship fund to provide opportunities for indigent students.
As a proactive measure, Dogara has established a foundation that offers scholarships to 200 students in Nigerian universities.
However, he acknowledged that this is just a drop in the ocean, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to prioritize education in Nigeria.
By prioritizing qualitative education, Nigeria can unlock its full potential and lift its citizens out of poverty.
As Dogara aptly put it, "We should prioritize investment in education in this country; otherwise, we are simply wasting our time if we think we can make progress while keeping our people ignorant." ¹
