MWAN Bauchi Commemorates World Prematurity Day with Clinical Presentation

In recognition of World Prematurity Day, the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), in collaboration with the Paediatric Department of ATBUTH Bauchi, organized a clinical presentation to raise awareness about the challenges of premature births and promote effective neonatal care practices.

The event, held on Thursday, 28th November 2024, at the Multipurpose Hall of ATBUTH, featured a keynote presentation by Dr. Kalthime Shuaibu, a paediatrician and the Public Relations Officer of MWAN Bauchi. She emphasized the critical importance of providing quality neonatal care and fostering collaboration among healthcare professionals.

The program was introduced by Dr. Aisha Zaidu, the Maternal and Child Health Coordinator of MWAN Bauchi, who highlighted the urgency of addressing prematurity. She remarked that premature birth remains a leading cause of infant mortality globally, demanding increased awareness, timely intervention, and professional collaboration to significantly reduce these numbers and give every baby a chance to thrive.

Highlighting the significance of the event, MWAN President and consultant gynaecologist at ATBUTH, Dr. Umma Hani Ja’afar, underscored the association’s endless commitment to maternal and child health. In her remarks, she stated:
“As a body of female medical professionals, our motto, ‘Matris animo currant’—healing with the love of a mother— guides all our efforts to improve healthcare for women and children.

Our recent initiatives, including cervical and breast cancer screenings, World Breastfeeding Week celebrations, and Iron Deficiency Anaemia Awareness programs, reflect this dedication. Today’s commemoration of World Prematurity Day is yet another testament to our mission of making quality care accessible everywhere.”

The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria is a national health organization representing female doctors registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). With chapters across all 36 states and the FCT, MWAN is affiliated with the Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA).
