14 Camps Established for 15,000 Flood Victims in Jigawa

From: Umar Akilu Majeri, DUTSE

The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has established 14 functional camps to host over 15,000 people displaced by the 2024 annual flood in the state. The flood, which affected 14 local government areas, has left thousands of people without shelter, food, or other basic necessities.

According to Alh Haruna Mai Riga, Executive Secretary of SEMA, the state government has taken immediate action to provide relief to the affected victims. "We have established 14 camps to provide shelter to the displaced persons," Mai Riga said. "We have also distributed food items and cash to the affected victims as assistance to alleviate their suffering."

Mai Riga appealed to residents living in low-lying areas to relocate to higher grounds to avoid being victims of annual flooding. He warned that the floodwaters could rise again, posing a threat to lives and property.

The National Dam Management has also made arrangements to open waterways to reduce the impact of flooding. This, according to Mai Riga, will help to prevent future flooding and reduce the risk of damage to crops, houses, and other infrastructure.

In addition to the relief efforts, the Jigawa State government has expressed interest in constructing more dams to reduce the impact of annual flooding and improve farming activities. This, according to Mai Riga, will help to boost agricultural production and provide a source of livelihood for farmers.

Mai Riga commended the efforts of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for their support and donations to the state during the flood. He specifically praised UNICEF and Save the Children for donating N95,730,000 to 500 selected flood victims. He also commended Governor Malam Umar Namadi for spending millions of naira to support the lives of the 15,000 flood victims in the state.

The SEMA boss called on other NGOs and well-meaning individuals to come to the aid of the state and support the relief efforts. He assured that the state government will continue to work tirelessly to provide relief to the affected victims and prevent future flooding.
