Health Risks: UNICEF Warns Adults Against RUTF Consumption

By Murtala Muhammad

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Nigeria Country Representative, Ms Cristian Munduate, has voiced concern over the actions of certain Nigerians who illegally sell Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF).

Speaking to journalists in the Miya Barkatai community of Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, Ms Munduate emphasised that RUTF is specifically designed for malnourished children, warning that its consumption by adults poses significant health risks.

Ms Munduate described the act of selling or misusing RUTF as a serious offence against the Nigerian state and urged the public to report any individuals or group involved in such activities.

She called on the government to take decisive action against any adult found selling or consuming the product.

During her visit, she also inspected a local women's group in the community that promotes the use of locally produced food as a preventative measure against malnutrition among women and children.

Ms Munduate highlighted that these locally produced foods are rich in essential nutrients, making them suitable for feeding pregnant and lactating mothers whose newborns feed from their breasts.

According to her, such foods also prevents malnutrition in children aged six months and above.
