Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has directed the police to arrest the Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Kiyawa Local Government Area, Isyaku Katanga, over alleged sabotage and illegal increase of N2000 on each farmer.
The governor's directive came after he received a security report alleging that some AFAN chairmen in the state were syphoning farming inputs and increasing costs for farmers.
During an unscheduled visit to Kiyawa Local Government Area, Governor Namadi testified that the AFAN chairman in the area was among the principal suspects.
The governor also ordered the Divisional Police Officer to retrieve all the money collected from farmers by the AFAN chairman.
Furthermore, he pledged to ensure that registered farmers receive the full package of farm inputs as directed by the Federal Government.
Some farmers expressed gratitude to the governor for his concern and action, which they hope will serve as a lesson to others. The governor also promised to support farmers across the 27 local government areas of the state.
Governor Namadi expressed anxiety over the delay and poor arrangements by Agro Dealers assigned to distribute farm inputs to wheat farmers in Kiyawa Local Government Area.
He warned that the state government would not tolerate such attitude and called on stakeholders to ensure registered farmers receive their allocation in good time.
The governor reiterated the state government's effort to resolve the problem and ensure farmers in the state complement the Federal Government's plans to cultivate about 100 hectares of wheat during the irrigation farming season.
