A Non-governmental Organization, Sickle Cell Self Help Initiative, has hosted a health talk with a view to raise awareness and foster a collective effort to improve care for individuals living with sickle cell anemia.
The event themed "Hope Through Progress: Advancing Care Globally" took place at the American Space within the Professor Iya Abubakar Resource Center in Bauchi, bringing together medical professionals and community members to discuss advancements in the care and prevention of sickle cell anemia.
The Registrar of the Hematology Department at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Dr. Fatima Magaji, delivered an insightful lecture on the implications of sickle cell anemia and methods to prevent the condition.
She highlighted the potential of gene editing as a corrective measure, along with other emerging treatment options that offer hope for those affected by the genetic disorder.
Dr. Magaji emphasized the importance of early intervention and public awareness to mitigate the disease's impact.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Sickle Cell Self Help Initiative, Fatima Bayero, also addressed the audience, stressing the importance of genetic testing for couples before marriage, urging to-be couples to undergo testing and counseling to prevent the birth of children with sickle cell anemia.
She noted that informed decisions from the part of the to-be couples would drastically reduce the prevalence of the condition.
The event gave opportunity to participants to ask diverse questions as medical expert, religious leaders and experienced parents of children with same condition provided answers.
