Bauchi Ministry of Education Seeks Regulation of Scrap Metal Scavengers

In a bid to curb the theft of infrastructure affecting schools, hospitals, and other public facilities in the state, the Bauchi State Ministry of Education has presented a paper on a bill aimed at regulating the activities of scrap metal scavengers, commonly known as _Bola Jari_.

The ministry, led by its Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Ali Babayo (Maganjin Rafin Gamawa), appeared before the Bauchi State House of Assembly to present the paper, which is part of the state government's broader commitment to safeguarding public resources and improving the quality of education and healthcare for the people of Bauchi.

The meeting, chaired by Mohammed Garba Ahmed, Chairman of the House Committee on Forestry, was attended by prominent stakeholders, including the Commissioner for Health, the Director-General of BASEPA, and the Project Coordinator of ACReSAL.

The initiative, first introduced by Alhaji Adamu Duguri (Wakilin Bauchi), Chairman of the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (BASUBEB), has gained momentum as a critical step towards protecting essential infrastructure.

The proposed bill seeks to regulate the activities of scrap metal scavengers, who have been accused of stealing infrastructure, including pipes, cables, and other valuable materials, from public facilities.

The ministry's move is aimed at addressing the growing challenges posed by illegal waste pickers, who have been linked to the theft of infrastructure, environmental degradation, and other social vices.

By regulating the activities of scrap metal scavengers, the state government hopes to protect public facilities, improve the quality of education and healthcare, and promote environmental sustainability.

The proposed bill is expected to undergo further review and debate by the state legislature before it is passed into law.
