A Bauchi State High Court has sentenced Usman Abdullahi to death by hanging for killing Zaidu Adamu Kofar Dumi over a handset charger. The presiding judge, Justice Sa'ad Muhammad Sambuwal, found Abdullahi guilty of causing grievous and culpable homicide contrary to sections 239 and 221 of the Penal Code ¹.
According to prosecution counsel, Barrister Abubakar Ahmed Kobi, the defendant had a misunderstanding with the victim and his friend, Ziya'u Abdulhadi, over the handset charger. The defendant used a knife to stab the victim in different parts of his body, causing grievous hurt. The victim was rushed to the Specialist Hospital Bauchi, where he was certified dead.
The trial began on December 30, 2021, with the prosecution counsel charging the defendant with two counts of causing grievous hurt and homicide. Counsel to the defendant, Barrister Naziru Umar, presented two witnesses and asked for leniency.
In his judgment, Justice Sambuwal convicted Abdullahi of culpable homicide punishable by death, sentencing him to death by hanging. Additionally, Abdullahi was sentenced to five years in the correctional service for grievous hurt.
