In a joint operation, the Bauchi State Police Command and the State Hisbah Command have raided the Malam Kawu Rehabilitation Center, arresting the founder, Mallam Kawu, and evacuating 10 children from the facility.
The center, located at Yakubu Wanka in Bauchi Local Government Area, was found to be harboring hardened criminals and allegedly committing sodomy. A former inmate, Yahaya Yusuf, had lodged a complaint with the Hisbah office, accusing Mallam Kawu of sodomy and alleging that he became HIV positive as a result.
According to the Permanent Commissioner of Hisbah, Barrister Aminu Balarabe Isa, the combined operation was a huge success, citing the danger posed by the center to the state. He revealed that children from several African countries, including Cameroon, Ghana, Niger, and Cote d'Ivoire, were brought to the center under the guise of rehabilitation.
Barrister Isa stated that the Hisbah office had received complaints about the center two months ago, prompting an impromptu visit. During the visit, officials discovered that the inmates were not being kept in good condition, and some alleged to have been sexually abused by other inmates.
The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Mohammed Ahmed Wakil, stated that the raid was carried out at the request of the Bauchi State government, following complaints about the rehabilitation center. Mallam Kawu was arrested and taken away for questioning, and investigations are ongoing to determine the truth behind the allegations.
CSP Wakil added that the police had invited Mallam Kawu for questioning prior to the raid, but he failed to honor the invitation. The police also received information that the center had over 400 inmates, although the exact number could not be confirmed.
The evacuated children are currently receiving medical attention, and officials are working to reunite them with their families. The Bauchi State government has vowed to take further action to address the allegations and ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.
