ATBU Suspends Ban On Students’ Use Of Gas Cylinder

The Management of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi state has suspended its earlier ban on the use of gas cylinders for cooking in hostels by students.

Prof. Sa’id Umar, the Dean, Students' Affairs of the university stated this during the orientation ceremony for the newly admitted students in the school on Sunday.

According to him, the Students Affairs Division in collaboration with the Students Union Government (SUG) has already drafted a guideline on the use of gas cylinders and management of hostels by the students population.

According to him, after review of the policy, the university agreed to allow for the use of only 3 kg cylinders in line with other institution's best practice, and anyone found using bigger cylinders will have it impounded.

Enlightening the students on fire outbreak, Assistant Superintendent of Fire 1, Federal Fire Service, Umar Lawal , said that 90 percent of fire outbreak is as a result of carelessness, negligence and ignorance.

The Federal Fire Service’s Public Relations Officers in the state warned the students against overloading of electrical appliances, adding that the action increases the chance of fire outbreak in hostels or any other places.

“Fire safety is essential in every aspect of human activities and if we can prevent fire outbreak occurrence, we can safe our lives, properties and the environment we live in for our daily activities.

“Overloading of electrical appliances in hostels is also part of carelessness because every circuit boxes have a capacity of current they can carry.

“While you are overloading these electrical appliances, you are increasing the chances of fire outbreak in that particular hostel,” he said.

Lawal also urged the students to always buy their gas cylinders in an authorized gas dealers or go to gas stations which he said, are regulated by the Department of Petroleum Resources.

Also speaking, Dr Aisha Alhassan, the Deputy Dean, Students' Affairs, hinted that the school is working to introduce periodic sanitation exercise and urged the students to see the hostels as their homes by doing everything possible to take proper care of the environment.

Presenting a paper titled ‘Don’t Lose Focus’, a Former Director Information and Public Relations of the University, Dr. Andee Iheme tasked the students to always be guided by the institution's rules and regulations.

He also called on them to strive for excellence by seeking advice and guidance through the appropriate channels to guarantee their safety and stay in the university.
