BASEPA Nabs 4 People Felling Trees, Vows to Prosecute Them

Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) with support from the Police have arrested 4 persons caught felling trees with a chainsaw for the purpose of timber making.

The incident happened recently in Nahuta village along Darazo-Bauchi Federal highway when the Director General of the Agency, Dr. Mahmud Bose was on a routine surveillance to enforce the law banning felling of trees in the State.  

Dr. Bose , who narrated the incident to our correspondent who passing along the road, said that he came across the 4 offenders while plying the road on a routine surveillance.  

He said that he stopped and walked up to them to casually inquire on why they were felling tree without revealing my identity. 

“ I casually placed a call away from the offenders , requesting for police back up from Darazo Division. I also called the Chairman of Darazo LGA, intimating on what i came across. He later joined us at the scene of the incident.

“When the police arrived, it was then that it dawned on the offenders the gravity of their offense. Thereafter they were arrested and taken into police custody”, the BASEPA DG narrated. 

While narrating his side of the story to our correspondent, the leader of the 4 offenders who is from Gombe State, Ibrahim Isa (not real name) said that he bought the tree from a land vendor in Nahuta village ( scene of the offense) with the aim of felling and chopping the tree into timber for profit. 

He admitted that felling of trees is an offense and that it was his first time of being arrested. 

As at the time of filing this report, the offenders were seen being taken away by the police.
