Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has described the death of a female journalist in the State, Hafsat Adebayo, as shocking and a great loss to the State; saying she served with diligence, passion, and an unwavering commitment to truth and ethical reporting.
Adebayo, died on Monday morning after battling a prolonged brain tumor and was a member of the Correspondents' Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bauchi State Council.
The mother of one, who worked for Daily Post as a Correspondent in Bauchi State for many years, has been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
She was a one-time Financial Secretary and Treasurer of the Correspondent' Chapel in the State.
In a statement signed and made available to journalists in the State by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, Governor Mohammed, said she played a vital role in shaping public discourse and promoting the ideals of a free and responsible press.
He said her dedication to duty and resilience in the face of challenges will be remembered as an inspiration to colleagues and aspiring journalists.
The statement was entitled: "Governor Bala Mohammed Mourns The Passing Of Hafsat Adebayo."
"It is with deep sorrow and a profound sense of loss that His Excellency, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed , the Government, and the entire people of Bauchi State receive the sad news of the passing of Hafsat Adebayo, a dedicated journalist and a member of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents' Chapel, Bauchi.
"Hafsat Adebayo died this morning in Bauchi after a prolonged battle with a brain tumor , governor Mohammed described her passing as a great loss not only to her immediate family but also to the journalism profession, particularly in Bauchi State, where she served with diligence, passion, and an unwavering commitment to truth and ethical reporting.
"Throughout her career, Hafsat Adebayo distinguished herself as a dedicated professional journalist, contributing immensely to the dissemination of accurate and objective information. She played a vital role in shaping public discourse and promoting the ideals of a free and responsible press. Her dedication to duty and resilience in the face of challenges will be remembered as an inspiration to colleagues and aspiring journalists.
"Governor Bala Mohammed extends his heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of late Hafsat Adebayo, praying that Almighty Allah grants them the strength to bear this great loss. Similarly, the Governor sympathizes with the leadership and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Chapter and the Correspondents Chapel who have lost a valuable colleague and a shining example of journalism profession," he said.
The Media Aide quoted the Governor as saying: “ The Government and the good people of Bauchi State recognize and appreciate the sacrifices and contributions of journalists to nation-building. The loss of Hafsat Adebayo is not just a personal tragedy for her loved ones but a collective loss for the entire state and the Media community."
The Chairman, Correspondents' Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bauchi State Council, Mal. Ahmed Mohammed, has expressed sadness over the demise of Hafsat Adebayo.
In a tribute, Mal. Mohammed described her as a brilliant writer who touched the lives of countless people.
"Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioun. My esteemed colleagues, it is with profound sadness that we received the passing away of our esteemed colleague, Mrs Hafsat Adebayo.
"Hafsat was a dedicated colleague, a passionate mother, and a brilliant reporter who touched the lives of countless people. Her wisdom, guidance, and unwavering commitment to excellence will be deeply missed.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to Hafsat's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. May her legacy continue to inspire and motivate us to strive for more excellence and professionalism," he wrote.
Similarly, the Chairman, NUJ, Bauchi State Council, Mal. Umar Saidu, expressed shock over the incident.
"Very sad news, but God decision is the best, may her soul rest in peace. Accept our condolences please," he stated.
The former National Secretary of the NUJ, Mal. Shuaibu Leman, in a terse message also wrote: "....From God we come and to Him we shall all one day return.... May Almighty Allah grant the family the fortitude to bear the great loss. May Allah forgive her shortcomings and dwell her soul in Aljannat firdausi. Fare thee well."
The former Chief Press Secretary to former Governor Isa Yuguda, Ishola Michael, said she fought greatly to stay alive but her time on earth was up.
"Hafast was a hardworking woman, a devoured wife and caring mother. She really fought to stay alive but her time was up and she had to leave. May her soul rest in peace and may God comfort and console her immediate family, especially her young son," he wrote.
In her tribute, the immediate past Chairperson, Nigeria Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bauchi State, Mrs. Bulak Afsa, also wrote: "May her soul rest in peace, go well."
Meanwhile, her colleagues, Members of the Correspondents' Chapel, the NUJ, friends and loved ones have continued to expressed shock over the unfortunate demise of Mrs. Adebayo.
They described her as a hardworking, intelligent and peace-loving journalist who would be greatly missed.
They recounted their encounters and the moments they shared together with her in the media profession for over a decade and a half.
