The Bauchi State government has commenced the implementation of the State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (SEMSAS), aimed at providing healthcare services to those in urgent need.
The programme is a subsidiary of the Federal Government's National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (NEMSAS), which is being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
Speaking to Radio Nigeria, during a training organised for staff of four General Hospitals and two private clinics in the state, the Head of Operations for Bauchi SEMSAS, Dr Aminu Tukur Sulaiman, explained that the programme consists of three components, allowing individuals to call the toll-free number 112 in case of a medical emergency.
He stated that upon receiving a call, an ambulance would be dispatched to transport the patient, with medical services provided for up to 48 hours.
Dr Sulaiman added that the toll-free number would be in use until a dedicated line is established for selected hospitals by SEMSAS.
In an interview, the Bauchi SEMSAS Coordinator, Dr Sulaiman Abubakar, who also serves as the Director of Medical Services in the State Ministry of Health, highlighted that the initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on citizens, particularly in emergency situations.
He urged trainees to commit themselves fully to the programme and called on the public to make good use of the opportunity.
