Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across the state with modern ICT facilities. The program, which is part of the Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (N-CARES) initiative, saw the distribution of 7,000 ICT-enhancement tools to SMEs in Bauchi. This initiative, backed by the World Bank, is designed to promote economic growth and development by improving business operations through digital innovation.
The beneficiaries, selected from all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state, received vital resources including laptops, smartphones, and Point of Sale (POS) machines. Governor Mohammed, in his address, emphasized that this initiative aligns with his administration's goal to foster economic prosperity in Bauchi State through technology and innovation.
"This program is a key step toward transforming the business landscape in Bauchi State. The ICT tools provided today are not just gadgets; they are opportunities for growth, employment, and increased productivity," Governor Mohammed stated during the distribution ceremony.
He urged the beneficiaries to make the best use of the tools provided, stressing the importance of becoming employers of labor and contributing positively to the state's economy. "By leveraging these facilities, you can build your businesses, create job opportunities, and help move Bauchi towards greater economic prosperity," he added.
The N-CARES program, which aims to support vulnerable households and improve the livelihoods of small businesses, has been lauded for its role in strengthening the economic resilience of Nigerian communities. Representatives from the National Project Coordinator, NG CARES, and the Bank of Industry commended the Bauchi State Government for its proactive role in empowering local businesses and enhancing ICT infrastructure.
Bauchi State was also recognized as one of the best-performing states in the federation, thanks to its efficient use of development programs aimed at enhancing the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Mohammed Sadiq Hamisu Shira, the Commissioner for Cooperatives and SMEs Development, noted that the initiative is part of Governor Mohammed's broader efforts to position Bauchi's entrepreneurs to compete on the global stage. "This effort will equip entrepreneurs with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world, positioning them for success both locally and internationally," Shira said.
In his presentation on the role of ICT in economic development, Hayattudeen Baba, the Director General of the Bauchi State Bureau for Information Communication Technology and Digital Economy, highlighted the transformative potential of digital tools. He underscored the importance of ICT in driving economic growth, encouraging entrepreneurs to embrace technology as a means of enhancing their businesses and reaching broader markets.
The distribution of the ICT facilities marks a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to boost economic activities, empower SMEs, and provide a robust foundation for future growth. With continued support from initiatives like N-CARES, Bauchi State is poised for a thriving digital economy that will benefit both entrepreneurs and the wider community.
