Bauchi Youth Group Questions Yakubu Dogara Over Bagel Dam Project

From: Lydia Zakka

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, recently called on President Bola Tinubu to prioritize two key projects in Bauchi State: reviving oil exploration and initiating the construction of the Bagel Dam in Dass Local Government Area (LGA).

Dogara suggested that these projects could serve as critical leverage for Tinubu’s reelection bid in Bauchi in 2027. However, his statements have raised eyebrows, especially regarding the stalled Bagel Dam project.

Daure David, the spokesman for the Bauchi State Democratic Youth Assembly, has questioned Dogara’s calls for action, pointing out that the Bagel Dam project was already budgeted for during Dogara’s tenure as Speaker of the House.

David’s concerns center around why the project, which was included in the Zonal Intervention Projects (ZIP), was not executed during that time.

“Where were the funds for the Bagel Dam project when Dogara was Speaker? The project was captured in the budget, but it seems there was little to no progress,” David questioned. “What stopped the execution of this project despite the fact that it was included in the ZIP during his tenure?”

David’s statements have sparked a renewed debate on the execution of developmental projects in Bauchi State. While the Bagel Dam remains a highly anticipated development for the people of Dass LGA, critics argue that the lack of follow-through from both Dogara and the government is a significant cause for concern.

David's comments suggest that political promises made during previous administrations must be measured against actual achievements, especially when key projects are already funded but left uncompleted.

In the face of these criticisms, Dogara’s call for President Tinubu to prioritize the Bagel Dam project and revitalize oil exploration in Bauchi is being scrutinized by observers who are questioning the sincerity of past efforts and the feasibility of such projects under the current leadership.

As the 2027 elections loom, the call for tangible development in Bauchi has never been more urgent. However, political leaders are being urged to provide concrete answers about why vital projects like the Bagel Dam, which hold the potential to improve the lives of many, have yet to come to fruition despite having been earmarked for funding.

The issue now is whether promises will again outweigh the progress in bringing critical infrastructure to Bauchi State, and whether Dogara’s appeal to the current administration will result in meaningful change. Political analysts and residents alike are watching closely for the next steps in the Bagel Dam project and other proposed developments in the region.
