Court Rejects Anyanwu’s Bid to Disrupt PDP Leadership, Upholds INEC’s Right to Update Party Records

From: Daure David

A Federal High Court in Abuja has once again ruled against Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s attempt to prevent the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing changes in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership.

In a ruling delivered this morning by Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo, the court rejected Anyanwu’s request to stop INEC from giving effect to changes in the PDP’s National Secretary position. The request was part of a broader legal battle led by the ousted National Secretary, who sought to retain his position despite internal party decisions.

The court ruled that Anyanwu must notify both INEC and the PDP to allow them an opportunity to respond, dismissing his ex parte application. This decision marks another setback for the embattled politician, who has engaged in a series of legal battles over the last few months, attempting to assert his position and challenge party leadership changes.

Senator Anyanwu has taken his case across multiple judicial platforms, including the Supreme Court, Appeal Court, Federal High Court, and High Court. There are speculations that he may soon escalate his dispute to the Customary Court, continuing his fight to regain the mandate he claims was given to him by his supporters.

This latest ruling is seen as a victory for the PDP, as it clears the way for INEC to update its records and officially recognize Rt. Hon. Udeh Okoye as the rightful National Secretary of the party, following earlier court rulings. Okoye’s appointment is in line with the PDP's internal restructuring efforts, aimed at restoring stability and legitimacy within the party’s leadership ranks.

PDP officials have expressed optimism that this legal victory will pave the way for the party to focus on its internal reforms, especially as it prepares for future elections. The ongoing internal conflicts have long posed a challenge for the party, but with this judgment, the PDP hopes to move forward with a unified leadership team.

As legal battles continue to unfold, it remains to be seen whether Anyanwu will pursue further legal avenues, or whether this latest ruling will bring an end to the prolonged leadership dispute. For now, the court’s decision has ensured that INEC can proceed with updates to the party’s official records, signaling a significant moment in the PDP’s efforts to regain political coherence.
