Don't Be Victims of Punishment - Bauchi Commissioner Warns Teachers

Dr Muhammed Lawal, the Bauchi state Commissioner for Education has warned all the teachers in the state not to allow themselves to be victims of punishment.

Lawal gave the warning in Bauchi on Tuesday while paying an impromptu visit to some selected schools in the state.

According to him, the warning is imperative as a result of the commitment of the state government in improving the welfare of its workforce in the state.

The commissioner, who explained that Gov. Bala Mohammad approved the minimum wage standard of the state to meet the current economic reality, said “I don't think we'll allow laxity from our staff.

“This is because all of them are earning something in commensurate with the current economic challenges of today.

“That is why this new minimum wage is being approved. For that of course, I wouldn't like to give them room for any ill doing in the education sector as their salaries are paid as and when due.

“Why I emphasized that I don't want each of them to be a victim is that they must take their responsibilities as teachers with utmost diligence, be serious, prompt and ready to work.

“Any shortfall of those traits, we are not going to take it easy or lightly with them and we will be giving surprise visits and anybody that chooses to be a victim will have to face the consequences”.

The Commissioner expressed satisfaction at the level at which all the learning materials provided by the state government were put into use in the schools.

He however, expressed dissatisfaction at the low turnout of students in some schools, especially the SS3 index students whose external examinations fees had already been paid for by the state governor.

“My only area of concern is the attitude of parents towards sending their children to schools because I have sampled both a boarding and a day school.

“In the day school, the population was not impressive. So, I tasked the principal to summon the school’s School Based Management Committee and Parents Teachers Association meeting to address it as soon as possible,” he said.

Responding, Hajiya Hadiza Ibrahim, Principal, Government Girls’ College, Bauchi, congratulated the commissioner over his appointment and promised to cooperate with him for the success of education in the state.

Some of the schools visited included; Comprehensive Day Secondary School, Government Girls College, Birshin Fulani Secondary School, General Hassan Usman Katsina Unity College and Special Education Centre, Yelwa.
