The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has categorically denied reports of a South South Zonal Congress held in Calabar, Cross River State, claiming it was a fabricated event orchestrated by unnamed organizers. According to the party, it has not conducted its South South Zonal Congress, and the gathering in Calabar should be disregarded.
In a statement issued by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary, the PDP clarified that the NWC had, in fact, postponed the scheduled South South Zonal Congress from its original date of Saturday, February 22, 2025. The decision, made during a meeting on February 20, 2025, was taken to allow for further consultations on critical issues regarding the smooth conduct of the Congress in the Zone.
"The PDP states in clear terms that it has not conducted its South South Zonal Congress neither is it in any way involved in the said gathering in Calabar," the statement reads.
The NWC referenced its constitutional powers, emphasizing that under Section 29 (2)(b) of the PDP Constitution, the body can act in emergencies on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC) subject to ratification. Furthermore, Section 31(2)(c) empowers the NEC to oversee the work of the party at all levels, including organizing Zonal Congresses.
The PDP also called on all party members, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the media to dismiss the reported gathering in Calabar as not representative of the official proceedings of the party.
The statement went on to reassure stakeholders in the South South Zone of the party's ongoing commitment to ensuring the unity, stability, and growth of the PDP. The NWC acknowledged the loyalty and dedication of the South South State Governors, leaders, and members, commending their continued support for the party.
For now, the PDP has not communicated a new date for the conduct of the South South Zonal Congress, but affirmed that it would do so through its official channels in due course.
The party’s position aims to quash any confusion or misinformation surrounding the Zonal Congress and maintain order within the party as it moves forward with its internal electoral processes.
