In an urgent statement made on Channels Television today, Otunba Segun Sowunmi, a prominent political figure and member of the opposition party, has called on the Federal Government to urgently declare a State of Emergency in Osun State, citing increasing security concerns and political instability.
Sowunmi, speaking during an interview on the popular TV station’s morning show, emphasized that the situation in the state had escalated beyond control. He described the ongoing crisis as a threat to the safety and well-being of the residents, as well as the stability of the state's political environment.
“Osun State is facing a severe security and governance crisis. We have seen an alarming rise in criminal activities, civil unrest, and political violence. The state government has failed to maintain law and order, and it has become clear that decisive intervention is necessary,” Sowunmi stated.
The call for a State of Emergency in Osun comes amidst reports of widespread clashes between political groups, increased attacks by armed bandits, and a breakdown in law enforcement. Sowunmi accused the state government of neglecting its primary responsibility to ensure the safety of its citizens and called on the Federal Government to step in and restore order.
“The Federal Government must act swiftly to avert further breakdown of law and order. A State of Emergency is the only solution to regain control over the security situation and ensure that the people of Osun can live in peace,” he added.
Sowunmi's remarks have sparked widespread discussion, with many political analysts and stakeholders in Osun State weighing in on the proposed declaration. While some have supported the idea of federal intervention, others have raised concerns about the implications of imposing a State of Emergency, citing the potential for further tension and conflict.
Meanwhile, the Osun State government has yet to respond to the call for a State of Emergency. However, political sources within the state have expressed alarm at the growing pressure from various quarters for federal intervention.
The Federal Government has not made any official statements on the matter as of now, but analysts believe that President Bola Tinubu’s administration may soon be forced to take action in response to the mounting pressure.
As the situation continues to unfold, all eyes are now on the Federal Government to decide whether it will heed Otunba Segun Sowunmi’s call or explore other measures to address the growing challenges in Osun State.
This development is expected to remain a major topic of discussion in political circles as the state braces for potential federal intervention.
