The Village Head of Tafawa Balewa, Mallam Abdullahi Maigida, and 206 others have filed a suit at the Bauchi State High Court to stop the Bauchi State Government from creating the Sayawa Chiefdom inside Tafawa Balewa town ¹.
The defendants in the suit include the Governor of Bauchi State, the Attorney General, the Bauchi State House of Assembly, and the Bauchi Emirate Council, among others.
Counsel to the plaintiffs, Rabiu Garba, has filed a motion experte and supporting affidavits, seeking leave to institute and prosecute the suit in a representative capacity.
Justice Saad I Zadawa, presiding over the case, has granted an order allowing the plaintiffs to proceed with the suit in a representative capacity for themselves and on behalf of non-Sayawa communities.
The court has directed that a motion on notice for interlocutory injunction be served on all defendants and has adjourned the matter to February 18, 2025, for hearing on the motion.
The controversy surrounding the creation of the Sayawa Chiefdom began in December 2024, when Bauchi State Governor Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed approved the establishment of the chiefdom, with its headquarters in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area.
While some Sayawa communities have supported the creation of the chiefdom, non-Sayawa communities in Tafawa Balewa have opposed the move, arguing that it would distort the town's history and origin.
