Angry Rivers Youth Set Fire to Wike’s Home Amid Impeachment Plans Against Governor Fubara

From: Joy Musa

In a shocking turn of events, angry youth in Rivers State have set fire to the residence of former Governor Nyesom Wike following growing tensions surrounding his involvement in efforts to impeach the state’s current Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The incident took place late yesterday evening, with the youths voicing their frustration over what they perceive as Wike’s betrayal of the state and his alleged efforts to destabilize the PDP.

Wike, who is currently serving as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has been at the center of a political storm ever since reports surfaced of his plans to align with pro-Wike lawmakers in Rivers to push for the impeachment of Governor Fubara.

Wike, who has long been a prominent figure in Rivers politics, is believed to be using his influence and the support of key political allies to orchestrate the impeachment move, leading to outrage among his supporters and constituents in his home state.

The situation has escalated as Wike’s perceived betrayal has triggered widespread anger from many Rivers residents, particularly the youth. The group, identified as “Rivers Youth for Change,” stormed Wike’s private residence late at night, setting it ablaze in a dramatic display of dissent.

While there have been no reports of casualties, the damage to Wike’s home is significant, and local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described a chaotic scene as the youths chanted slogans against Wike, accusing him of working with the federal government to destabilize the state and weaken the PDP.

The protestors voiced concerns over Wike’s recent moves, alleging that his alignment with President Tinubu was part of a larger strategy to undermine the power of the PDP, particularly in Rivers State, a stronghold of the opposition party.

“Wike is a traitor to his people and to the PDP. He was once our champion, but now he is trying to destroy everything we’ve fought for. We cannot stand by and let him sell out our state,” said one of the protestors, who wished to remain anonymous.

The growing tensions come as the political landscape in Rivers State remains precariously balanced. Governor Fubara, a close ally of the former governor during the election campaigns, now finds himself at odds with his predecessor.

The impeachment move, if successful, would significantly shake the political foundation in the state and add to the deepening rift within the PDP.

Political analysts believe that Wike’s controversial role as Minister of the FCT may have deepened the divide. Some have speculated that his relationship with the federal government and his actions in Rivers State may be part of a broader strategy to destabilize the opposition party at both the state and national levels.

Critics have accused him of working with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to weaken the PDP, especially in states where the party has a stronghold.

“The timing of this move is highly suspicious,” said Dr. Chuka Okafor, a political analyst. “Wike has been a key figure in the PDP, and now, with his sudden alignment with the APC and the push to impeach Fubara, many believe this is a calculated attempt to destabilize Rivers State and the PDP as a whole.”

In response to the incident, the Rivers State Police Command has promised to investigate the arson attack and bring the perpetrators to justice. However, local authorities have urged calm as political tensions continue to rise in the region.

Governor Fubara has yet to publicly address the issue, but sources close to the governor indicate that he is closely monitoring the developments and may soon issue a statement.

As Rivers State grapples with these unfolding events, the political future of both Wike and Fubara remains uncertain. The situation continues to spark heated debates across the state, as political allegiances and loyalties are tested in what promises to be a defining moment in Rivers politics.

This incident has raised concerns over the growing polarization in the state, with many calling for dialogue and reconciliation before further violence erupts. The people of Rivers State now find themselves watching closely as the drama unfolds, hoping for a resolution that can prevent further division and turmoil.

The coming days will undoubtedly reveal the next chapter in this volatile political saga.
