In a shocking and brutal act of mob justice, a group of Northerners returning home for the Sallah celebrations were attacked and murdered by a vigilante group in Edo State. The victims were falsely accused of being “Fulani herdsmen” and kidnappers, leading to their violent beating and subsequent burning alive. This disturbing incident has ignited widespread condemnation and demands for justice across the nation.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the victims, who were traveling through the area to celebrate the religious holiday, were swiftly profiled and accused without evidence or due process. The vigilantes, acting on these baseless claims, launched an immediate attack. Despite the presence of local law enforcement, no intervention was made to stop the assault. The victims were severely beaten and set on fire, with many of them still alive as the flames consumed them.
The failure of the police to intervene during the attack has raised serious concerns about the ability and willingness of law enforcement to protect citizens, especially in such critical situations. Public outrage has mounted over the authorities' negligence in preventing this atrocity.
The National Coalition of Christian Youths in Politics (NCCYP) has strongly condemned the violence and called for an immediate investigation into the incident. Spokesman Daure David, in a statement released to the press, stressed that those responsible for the deaths must be held accountable and that the police officers who failed to act should also face consequences for their negligence.
"This is an act of barbarism that cannot be tolerated in any civilized society," said David. "The perpetrators of this horrendous act must be brought to justice, and the police officers who stood by and did nothing must be held accountable for their failure to protect innocent lives."
NCCYP’s National Leader, Mr. Jonathan Taimako JP, also spoke out against the rise of mob justice in the country, calling for stronger measures to prevent such attacks. He urged the government to take decisive action in strengthening the capacity of security agencies to uphold the law and ensure the safety of all citizens, particularly during times of heightened tensions.
“This horrific incident is a clear example of the dangers of mob justice,” Taimako said. “The law must prevail, and no one should be allowed to take the law into their own hands. It is imperative that the government acts swiftly to ensure that these criminals are brought to justice and to prevent future occurrences.”
As of now, local authorities have not provided an official statement on the incident, but the growing public outcry demands urgent action. Human rights organizations, civil society groups, and Nigerians across the country are calling for justice and accountability.
This tragic event highlights the ongoing problem of mob violence in Nigeria and the critical need for law enforcement to better protect vulnerable citizens from such brutality. The failure of the police to intervene in this case raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of security forces and their ability to maintain peace and uphold justice.
The National Coalition of Christian Youths in Politics has vowed to continue its efforts in seeking justice for the victims and ensuring that such violence is not allowed to continue.
