The Markaz Old Boys Association (MOBA) has issued a strong appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kaduna State Governor Senator Uba Sani, and human rights organizations to launch a comprehensive investigation into the controversial raid on the residence of renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi in Kaduna.
The raid, which occurred during the tenure of former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has been widely condemned as a gross violation of human rights and an abuse of power. On the fateful day, security personnel stormed the residence, firing teargas and forcibly evacuating 160 Qur'anic pupils to an unknown destination.
In a statement, MOBA Assistant Secretary Mallam Ahmad Tijjani Muhammad described the raid as "an injustice, unwarranted, and an abuse of fundamental human rights." He emphasized that Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, a respected Islamic cleric and peace advocate, deserved a formal apology from El-Rufai for the traumatic experience inflicted upon him, his family, and disciples.
The association demanded that El-Rufai be held accountable for his actions, which they believe demonstrate a blatant disregard for human rights and the rule of law. MOBA urged the authorities to bar El-Rufai from holding any public office in the future, citing his lack of respect for human dignity and fundamental rights.
Furthermore, the association called on Governor Uba Sani to take immediate action to rectify the wrongs committed by his predecessor. They appealed to the governor to ensure justice for Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi and his disciples, who were victimized by the raid.
The incident has generated widespread outrage and condemnation, particularly given Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi's reputation as a champion of peace, stability, and Islamic scholarship in Kaduna State and Nigeria. The Sheikh's foundation has made significant efforts to recover the evacuated pupils, but many remain unaccounted for.
As the call for accountability grows louder, El-Rufai's legacy as a public servant is coming under increasing scrutiny. The outcome of the investigation will be closely watched, as it may have far-reaching implications for the former governor's future in politics.
