The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDPGF) has vowed to take legal action following the suspension of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and other elected officials from the state. The decision, which has sparked widespread controversy, was announced by the ruling government earlier this week.
In a statement released by the PDPGF, the forum condemned the suspension as politically motivated and vowed to challenge the move in court. According to the governors, the suspension of Governor Fubara, alongside other state officials, undermines the democratic process and represents a direct assault on the will of the people of Rivers State.
"This unwarranted suspension of a democratically elected governor and other officials is a blatant disregard for constitutional order. We will not stand by and allow this attack on democracy to stand," said a spokesperson for the PDP Governors’ Forum Dr. Emmanuel Agbo.
The move has already drawn strong reactions from various political analysts and stakeholders, who believe the suspension is part of broader political maneuvering in the wake of the 2023 presidential elections.
Rivers State has long been a stronghold of the PDP, and the suspension of its governor is seen by many as an attempt to weaken the party's grip on the region. Governor Fubara, who took office in 2023, has continued to enjoy strong support from the people of the state, despite ongoing tensions with the federal government.
The PDPGF's decision to take legal action underscores the party’s commitment to defending its members and upholding the rule of law. The forum has called on its supporters to remain calm and resolute as they await the outcome of the legal challenge.
"The PDP will continue to fight for the rights of the people and ensure that justice prevails," the statement concluded.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on the courts to determine whether the suspension stands or if Governor Fubara and the other officials will be reinstated.
Further developments are expected in the coming days as the legal challenge progresses.
