The PDP Northern Minority Consultative Forum has expressed its disappointment in the recent actions of Segun Showunmi, a prominent Nigerian politician, for what they describe as a lack of consistency in his political stance.
The Forum, which is made up of influential members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Northern Nigeria, issued a statement in response to Showunmi's participation in the International Press Conference organized by the Coalition of Progressives in Abuja and his subsequent presence at the Supreme Court to celebrate the controversial victory of Sam Daddy, a member of the inner caucus of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and a known ally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) within the PDP.
In the statement, the Forum questioned Showunmi's political alignment and moral integrity. "You have always been an epitome of hope and a better future for Nigerian youths, guided by sound principles and ideology. However, your recent activities leave much to be desired," the statement read.
The controversy arose after Showunmi was sighted at the Supreme Court, celebrating the ruling in favor of Sam Daddy, who is considered by many to be a supporter of the APC within the PDP. The Forum emphasized that the Supreme Court had made it clear that the resolution of internal party disputes falls under the responsibility of the political party and not the judiciary. The Court had set aside the lower court rulings, which had led to claims of victory for Sam Daddy from APC-sponsored press releases.
The Forum has called on Showunmi to clarify his political position, citing concerns over his perceived inconsistency. "As a young and promising politician, consistency and high moral standards should be your watchwords," the statement noted, urging Showunmi to realign his actions with his public messages.
In a direct appeal, the Forum advised the politician to "retrace your steps and practice exactly what you preach," stressing that his recent behavior, which they view as playing both sides, could damage his integrity and reputation among the Nigerian youth.
This public rebuke from the PDP Northern Minority Consultative Forum has raised questions about the political direction and alliances within the PDP, as Showunmi’s actions seem to signal a shift toward the APC-backed faction within the party.
The statement concluded with a call for Nigerian politicians to uphold strong principles, especially in the eyes of the youth, who the Forum believes are the key to the country's political future.
